Description
Electronic Freight Transport Information (eFTI) is a cornerstone of the European Union’s strategy to digitalise freight transport and modernise enforcement. The eFTI Regulation establishes a harmonised framework for the electronic exchange of freight transport data between economic operators and public authorities across the EU.
For national enforcement authorities and labour inspectorates, this represents a fundamental shift from paper-based controls to secure, real-time digital access to certified freight data. Successful implementation therefore depends on authorities being fully prepared to understand the legal framework, the technical architecture, and the operational use of eFTI in day-to-day enforcement activities.
The workshop, co-organised by the European Labour Authority (ELA) and the European Commission (DG MOVE), directly supports this readiness by:
- Building institutional and operational understanding of the eFTI Regulation, including obligations, scope, and implementation timelines.
- Supporting the transition to paperless freight transport, reducing administrative burden for operators and authorities.
- Enabling faster, more accurate roadside and back-office checks through digital data access.
- Reducing enforcement costs by limiting physical document inspections and manual verification.
- Improving data quality, traceability, and transparency to strengthen monitoring and policy implementation.
Importantly, the workshop links transport legislation with labour law enforcement, demonstrating how eFTI can support checks on posting of drivers and other social rules, turning compliance verification into a streamlined digital process rather than a document-based exercise.
Overall, the workshop equips frontline authorities with the knowledge and tools needed to shift from paper-based inspections to efficient, digital, and data-driven enforcement.
