Getting to know free movement bodies

Published date:

New ELA resources on the bodies that support worker mobility.

News

The European Labour Authority has launched a new campaign to raise awareness of free movement bodies (FMBs) that support worker mobility across the EU and EEA. This initiative marks 10-year anniversary of the bodies.

What FMBs do

FMBs support fair labour mobility and equal treatment of EU workers and their families across the EU and EEA. Each Member State designates one or more FMBs, such as ministries of labour or public employment services, so structures vary between countries. Their tasks include:

  • Protect the rights of EU workers and their family members.
  • Provide information, advice and assistance to mobile workers and their families
  • Act as contact points for cooperation between countries.

  • Identify barriers to free movement and support practical solutions.
  • Share guidance on how EU rules are applied at national level.

ELA supports the free movement bodies by helping them improve information and services, strengthening their capacity and encouraging the exchange of good practices. This work is part of ELA's wider role in supporting fair labour mobility.

Awareness campaign and resources

As part of the awareness campaign, ELA produced an animated video highlighting the role and tasks of the bodies and updated the country pages with the relevant FMB contact point for each EU and EEA country.
