Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and algorithms in risk assessment: addressing bias and other ethical issues

The initiative, held in Copenhagen on 15 and 16 of June, is part of ELA programme on Artificial Intelligence and algorithms in risk Assessment.

Workshop Artificial Intelligence

More than 70 experts from competent authorities in the domains of labour, social security, tax and digitalization, representing 23 Member States, had the opportunity to discuss the practical and ethical aspects of the use of algorithms, rule-based models, automated processes, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for risk assessment in labour mobility, social security and enforcement. The discussions centred around addressing biases in algorithmic systems, enhancing transparency and interpretability of machine learning models, guidelines for integrating feedback from stakeholders, compliance with relevant national and EU regulations and guidelines. Relevant national experiences were presented. Additionally, the workshop included a study visit at the Danish Tax Agency.

This workshop was preceded by an online training which took place on 26 May and attracted more than 170 participants representing all 27 Member States. It focused on addressing bias and other legal and ethical issues in the use AI for risk assessment in labour mobility and social security. The applicable legal framework and ethical guidelines, as well as practical tools, approaches and mitigation strategies were the focus of the training.

This workshop was an occasion for ELA to explore, together with National Authorities, new technologies and methodologies in risk assessment. It was also an opportunity for networking and creating beneficial synergies for future collaborations. Following the success of the first events, ELA will extend the AI programme with additional practical seminars and trainings.
